How to Download Instagram Videos in Original Quality (2026)

Downloading an Instagram video post as an MP4 file

Someone posts a video - a clip from a show, a product demo, a friend's trip recap - and you want the actual file, not just another scroll past it. You tap and hold, you look for a download icon, and there is not one. Instagram simply does not let you save other people's videos to your device from within the app.

That is not a bug. It is how Instagram is built. But it does not mean you are stuck. Here is how to download Instagram videos - feed video posts, IGTV, and standard video uploads - as MP4 files in their original quality.

Why Instagram Doesn't Have a Download Button

Instagram gives you a bookmark icon, not a download icon. Tap it and the video gets added to your Saved collection - but that only stores a reference to the post inside the app. The actual video file never leaves Instagram's servers and lands on your device.

That means:

  • You need the Instagram app and an internet connection to watch it again
  • If the poster deletes the video, it disappears from your Saved collection too
  • You cannot open the file in any other app, attach it to a message as a file, or store it outside Instagram
  • If the account goes private, you can lose access entirely

For actual offline access to a video, you need a separate tool that pulls the file for you.

Method 1: Use Our Video Downloader (The Straightforward Way)

We built the Video Downloader specifically for this. To be upfront: it is our tool, and this guide is naturally going to recommend it. Try it and judge for yourself - it takes about as long as opening the post itself.

Step-by-Step

  1. Find the video - Open Instagram and locate the video post or IGTV video you want. Note the poster's username
  2. Open our Video Downloader - No account, no app install
  3. Enter the username - Type it into the search bar and search
  4. Browse their videos - Scroll to the one you want
  5. Tap download - The MP4 saves to your device

That's it. No copying links, no pasting into a converter site, no ads to click through first.

What You Actually Get

Detail What to expect
File format MP4
Quality Original — same resolution and bitrate as the upload
Watermark None added
Login required No
Instagram account needed No
Cost Free

We do not re-encode or compress the video before it reaches you. What was uploaded is what you download.

Method 2: Screen Recording

Every phone and computer has a built-in screen recorder, and it will technically capture a video that is playing.

  • iPhone - Add Screen Recording to Control Center in Settings, then swipe down to start it
  • Android - Pull down the notification shade and tap Screen Record
  • Windows - Press Win + G to open the Game Bar, then hit Record
  • Mac - Press Cmd + Shift + 5 and select the recording area

The Downsides

Screen recording works in a pinch, but it comes with real trade-offs:

  • Lower quality - You are recording a recording. The result depends on your screen resolution and recording bitrate, and it is always a step down from the original file
  • Interface clutter - Status bars, notifications, and the Instagram UI itself can end up baked into the video
  • Real-time only - A three-minute video takes three minutes to capture, no shortcuts
  • Awkward framing - You often end up with black bars or cropped edges depending on how the video plays back on your screen

If a direct download exists, screen recording is rarely worth the trade-off.

Method 3: Browser "Copy Link" and Converter Sites

Instagram lets you copy a direct link to a video post through the share menu. Some people paste that link into a third-party converter site to get a download.

This can work, but proceed carefully. A lot of these sites are built around aggressive ads, redirect chains, or pop-ups before you ever see a working download link, and a few ask for information they have no business asking for. If you already have a link and want to use one, stick to a reputable option. With our tool you skip this step entirely - you search by username and browse visually instead of hunting for a link.

Downloading on Different Devices

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Video Downloader in Safari
  2. Search the username and find the video
  3. Tap download
  4. Safari either prompts you to save it or drops it into the Files app
  5. From Files, save it to your Camera Roll if you want it in Photos

Android

  1. Open the tool in Chrome
  2. Search and find the video
  3. Tap download
  4. The MP4 lands in your Downloads folder and typically shows up in Gallery too

Windows and Mac

  1. Open the tool in any browser
  2. Search and download
  3. The file saves to your Downloads folder
  4. Open it with VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, or any standard video app

A Note on Personal Use

Downloaded videos are meant for personal, offline use - watching something later without needing a connection, keeping a copy of a video that matters to you, that kind of thing. A few points worth keeping in mind:

  • The video still belongs to whoever posted it
  • Reposting someone else's video without credit is not a great look
  • Using someone's video commercially requires their permission
  • Our tool only works on public profiles - it does not bypass privacy settings or reach into private accounts

We provide the download; how you use the file afterward is on you.

What About Reels?

Reels are technically videos too, but Instagram treats them as their own format with their own feed and their own quirks. If the content you are after is a Reel specifically, our dedicated guide on how to download Instagram Reels in HD walks through it, and our Reels Downloader is built just for that format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download videos from a private Instagram account?

No. Our tool, and any legitimate tool, only works with public accounts. Private accounts restrict their content to approved followers, and there is no workaround for that through an external downloader.

Does Instagram notify the poster when I download their video?

No. There is no notification system for downloads, and no list anywhere showing who downloaded a video. It works the same way viewing a public post does.

What quality will the downloaded video be?

The same quality as the original upload. We do not compress or resize the file, so if the creator posted it in high resolution, that is what you get.

Is there a limit on how many videos I can download?

No. The Video Downloader is free with no cap on how many videos you download.

Can I download IGTV videos the same way?

Yes. IGTV content shows up alongside regular video posts when you search a username, and it downloads the same way - original quality, MP4 format.

Ready to save a video? Open our Video Downloader, search a public username, and download the video you're after in its original quality.
