Does Instagram have profile views?

April 4, 202621 دقيقة قراءة
Instagram profile views: an account owner sees a count of profile visits, never a list of names

No. Instagram does not show anyone who looked at their profile. That holds for personal, creator and business accounts, and for Instagram Plus, the $3.99-a-month subscription Meta launched in May 2026.1 2 What Instagram keeps is a count. Any public account can see how many actions people took on its profile after seeing each post or story,3 4 and nothing in the app or in Meta's developer API attaches a name to that number.5

So if you have been looking at someone's profile, the visit itself can't give you away. A handful of other things can, and they are listed in the next section.

You may also have read that Instagram is testing a "14-day profile view counter." We found nothing from Instagram or Meta that says so. The sites repeating it cite each other, and the story looks like three real features blended into one fake one. We trace it in the last part of this article.

What can give you away

Opening a profile, scrolling the grid, reading the bio or going through the follower list sends no notification and puts you on no list. These actions are different:

What you do What the other person sees
Open their profile, grid, bio, tagged tab or follower list Nothing
Watch their story Your username in the viewer list, for 48 hours after it was posted6
Watch one of their highlights Nothing documented once the original story is more than 48 hours old6
Like a post, then unlike it The activity entry disappears, but a push notification that already went out stays7
Follow, then unfollow A follow notification. Unfollowing sends none8 9
Comment, tag or mention them Possibly a notification. Instagram says people "can receive" one, and mentions in comments notify for accounts they follow8
Watch a Reel or video A view count, with no name10
Read a message they sent you A read receipt, unless you turned read receipts off11
Screenshot a post, story or profile Nothing documented (screenshot rules in detail)12
Screenshot a disappearing photo or video in a chat A dotted circle next to the message12
Join their Live The host "and anyone else who's viewing may be able to see that you've joined"13
Search for them Nothing documented. The Help Center describes search history as your own list of recent searches, which you can clear14

The story ring is the easy mistake. It sits on the same screen as the profile, and it's the only thing there that Instagram documents as recording your name. The viewer list stays available for 48 hours, a day longer than the story itself.6 15 Instagram Plus subscribers can preview a story without being added to that list, and the Help Center confirms those previews are left off it.2 6 Our guide to viewing stories anonymously covers the other options and what each one costs.

Two details trip people up. Unliking doesn't recall the notification: "If you've accidentally liked a photo and then unliked it, the person who posted it will still get a push notification if they have notifications turned on."7 And the person who posted always sees your like, even if you use the setting that hides your likes from everyone else.16

Being logged out, or on a second account, changes nothing for the profile owner. A public profile can be viewed without any account,17 and visits aren't reported from any account.

What Instagram reports to an account owner falls into three layers. Sources: Instagram Help Center, retrieved 22 September 2026.

Finding your own profile visit count

Your account has to be public. "You need to have a public (personal or professional) account on Instagram to view insights," the Help Center says, and switching to private turns Insights off.18

In the app:

  1. Open your profile.
  2. Tap Your dashboard on a personal account, or Professional dashboard on a business or creator account.19
  3. For a single post, open it, tap View insights and look at Profile activity.3 For a story, open it from your archive and swipe up.4

On instagram.com, choose Dashboard in the left-hand menu.18

The number is attached to each post and story, not to the account. Post insights define Profile activity as "the number of actions people take when they visit your profile after engaging with your post."3 Story insights describe it as "actions taken from your story, such as profile visits, follows, or website clicks," and keep it available for up to two years after the story is created.4 Reels get Views, Watch time, Viewers, Average watch time and Follows, with no profile activity at all.10 The account overview shows Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared, and none of those is a count of profile visits.20

Instagram Help Center, “Available insights for posts”: Views, Interactions, and Profile activity, “the number of actions people take when they visit your profile after engaging with your post.”
Instagram Help Center, “View insights on your Instagram posts”, retrieved 22 September 2026.

The useful thing to do with it is compare posts. A post that sends people to your profile is doing something its like count won't show. Meta's developer version of the same metric splits the count by what people tapped next (bio link, call, email, text, directions), which tells you whether visitors were browsing or getting in touch.21 Instagram doesn't explain how visits are counted, for example whether your own visits are excluded, so treat it as a trend line.

If you've read that Insights are only for business and creator accounts, that came from somewhere. Two older Help Center pages still limit Insights to business accounts,22 23 and so did eleven of the fourteen ranking pages we read in September, including the top result.24 The newer pages describe dashboards as "centralized hubs available to all public accounts," which matches what the app shows today.19

There used to be an account-wide figure. Profile views appeared in Insights by early 2018 as a seven-day chart.25 Meta deprecated the account-level profile_views metric in its API in October 2024, for all versions from 8 January 2025,26 and the Help Center's current Insights pages no longer list it.20

Why profile viewer apps cannot work

Search either app store for "who viewed my Instagram profile" and you'll get pages of results. None of them can show you a list, because Instagram doesn't give that data to anyone.

An app can learn about your account in two ways: through Meta's API with your permission, or by logging in as you. The API route only returns totals. Meta's Account Insights reference (updated 16 June 2026) lists every metric an app can request, including reach, views, likes, follows and profile link taps, and none of them identifies a person.5 Per-post profile_visits and profile_activity are counts too.21 Only the account owner can grant access, and the consumer API that served personal accounts was switched off on 4 December 2024: "All requests to the Instagram Basic Display API will return an error message."26

Meta for Developers changelog entry dated October 2, 2024: the email_contacts, get_direction_clicks, profile_views, text_message_clicks, website_clicks and phone_call_clicks time series metrics will no longer be supported
The Instagram Platform changelog, retrieved 22 September 2026. The account-level profile_views metric was removed from API v21.0, and from all versions on 8 January 2025.

That leaves logging in as you. We read eight app listings and their reviews on 22 September 2026, and they fell into three groups.

  • Follower analytics under a new label. The app tracks your followers over time and presents the most active ones as "profile viewers." The most-reviewed Google Play app we opened (500,000+ downloads) says so in its description: "We analyze signals you can legally access to estimate profile viewers (likes & comments)." One reviewer: "it's only showing the people that have followed you, not people that have simply looked at your profile."27
  • A paywall in front of nothing. Blurred "viewers," then a subscription. The iOS app InStalker states in its own description that "Instagram does not hand out a list of who opened your profile, to us or to anyone else," and on the same page sells an in-app purchase called "See Who Viewed Your Instagram" for $3.99.28 Others charge $6.99 to $7.99 a week.29 30
  • Password collection. In November 2015 an app called InstaAgent, downloaded about half a million times, was caught sending users' Instagram passwords unencrypted to a remote server and posting to their accounts without permission. Apple and Google removed it within a day.31 32

A Google Play review of another app makes the case better than we can: "It just takes random people from your followers list and say they viewed your profile. How is someone who passed away 3 years ago my stalker?"33

Instagram warns that if you give an app your login, "they can gain complete access to your account,"34 and giving your password to a third-party app is one of the reasons it lists for restricting an account.35

If you already installed one, change your Instagram password first. Then go to your profile, open the menu, and remove the app under Website permissions → Apps and websites → Active. An app that took your password directly won't be listed there, which is why the password change comes first. Instagram notes that a removed app "may have stored information from when you were using it."36

Where the 14-day counter rumor came from

Through 2026, around ten sites published nearly the same paragraph: Instagram has "confirmed" it is testing a feature that shows "how many times your profile was viewed over the past 14 days," with no names attached.37 38 39 Some add a quote from Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, from a "July 2026 Q&A."40

We followed the links back.

  • The earliest version we found is a PostLink post first published on 30 March 2026. It names no source.37 Later articles cite each other or nothing.
  • The Mosseri quote appears only on marketing blogs. Kontentino, the blog that introduced it, links to his profile page instead of a post,40 and IGDetective, one of the sites repeating the claim, concedes in its own notes that it is "secondary-sourced until a primary transcript or a recognized tech-press write-up can be linked here."39
  • We found no 2025 or 2026 coverage of an Instagram profile-view test in TechCrunch, Engadget, Social Media Today, 9to5Mac, Android Authority, Android Police or PhoneArena. Instagram's @creators account announced an Insights redesign on 24 April 2026 without mentioning profile views.41
  • On 22 September 2026, the second Google result for "does instagram have profile views" was an Instagram post from 1 April 2026 whose first bullet begins "Profile views are now public" and claims everyone can see exactly who viewed their profile. A few lines down: "Take a deep breath… it's April Fools."42

The post as it appears logged out on instagram.com, 22 September 2026. Google's snippet showed only the opening lines.

Three real things seem to have been merged into the rumor.

  1. A Threads feature. In March 2026, according to creator-economy writer Lindsey Gamble, Threads (Meta's other app) started showing a "recent views" number on some profiles. It counts how often the account's posts were viewed over the last 30 days, appears once an account passes 10,000 views, and can be switched off.43 Post views, on a different app.
  2. A date filter. Instagram Insights let you pick the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or the previous month.18 "Past 14 days" is a preset you can apply to any metric.
  3. A number next to your bio. When Insights opened to public personal accounts, the profile screen gained a dashboard summary of "your performance over the last 30 days."19 Its main figure is Views, "the number of times your content was played or displayed."20 People read it as profile views. On Reddit in July 2025: "I have only 341 followers but my profile viewer count keeps rapidly increasing and right now is at 73k."44 Seventy-three thousand profile visits on a 341-follower account would be strange. Seventy-three thousand Reel plays is ordinary.

The same rumor went around X and TikTok in August 2024, and Dexerto looked for an announcement and found none.45

Timeline of Instagram profile-view features and rumors, 2015 to September 2026
Blue entries are documented product or API changes, green is Threads, red entries are rumor cycles. Every entry is sourced at the end of the article.

As of 8 October 2026 we treat the 14-day counter as a rumor. A Help Center page, or a post from @instagram, @creators or @mosseri, would change that, and we'd update this article at the top.

We also think Meta is heading the other way. Instagram Plus, launched on 27 May 2026 and rolled out worldwide from 4 June,2 46 charges for ways to look without being seen: subscribers can "preview a story without showing up as a viewer." For the person posting, it adds an aggregate rewatch count and a search box for the viewer list they already had.2 A company about to reveal profile visitors would be unlikely to sell its users a way to hide from story owners.

How other platforms compare

Two big platforms do show profile viewers, and both let viewers stay hidden.

Platform Shows who viewed your profile? What you get instead
Instagram No Profile activity counts per post and story, and the story viewer list20 3 6
Threads No Profile visit counts per post, and a public "recent views" number on some profiles47 43
Facebook No. "Third-party apps are also unable to provide this functionality."48 Nothing comparable
TikTok Yes, but only between people who both turned on Profile view history. It's off by default, limited to users 16 and over with fewer than 5,000 followers, and covers 30 days49 Post view history, also opt-in50
LinkedIn Yes. Free accounts see the last three viewers from 90 days, Premium up to 365 days. Anyone in private mode shows up as "LinkedIn Member"51 52 Viewer trends on Premium
Snapchat No Story viewer names, and on Snapchat+ a count of friends who rewatched53 54
X No A "User profile clicks" count in post analytics55
Pinterest No A "Profile visits" count per Pin56

Frequently Asked Questions

Does looking at someone's profile a lot make Instagram suggest me to them?

Nothing Instagram documents works that way. Its recommendations page describes suggestions as personalized to the person seeing them and says nothing about showing an account to the people who viewed it.57 If someone you looked at keeps appearing in your search bar, that's your own activity shaping your own suggestions.

Can someone see if you viewed their highlights?

Instagram doesn't document it. The story viewer list lasts 48 hours after posting,6 and the Help Center describes no viewer list for highlights, so a highlight whose story is older than 48 hours shouldn't show your name, as far as anything Instagram documents.

Is Instagram adding a profile views feature?

Not that anyone can show. The 2026 "14-day profile view counter" story has no Help Center page, Instagram post or press report behind it.37 39 Threads shows a "recent views" number on some profiles,43 which is a different app and a different number.

Are "who viewed my Instagram profile" apps safe?

No. Meta's API has no viewer data to give them,5 so the ones we read guess from likes and comments or show random followers.27 33 The ones that ask for your password can take over your account.34

Can I see who viewed my Reel?

No. You get a view count, and anyone can see the counts on your Reels tab.58 Every Reel insight is a number.10 Stories are the only posts with a viewer list you can check afterwards. We go into this in can you tell who viewed your Instagram Reel.

Does the profile visit count include me looking at my own profile?

Instagram doesn't say. Each definition is one sentence and lists no exclusions,21 3 so any confident answer you read elsewhere is a guess.

StoryStalker runs a viewer for public Instagram content, so we follow how Instagram works and how it changes more closely than most people would want to. Each guide is built from Instagram's Help Center, Meta's announcements and developer documentation, and named reporting, and every claim links to the page it came from. When Instagram doesn't document something, we say so instead of guessing. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.
