Does Instagram notify when you screenshot?

For stories, posts, Reels, highlights and profiles, no. Instagram doesn't document any notification when you screenshot or screen record them, and we found no report of one since Instagram tested a story screenshot alert in 2018 and ended the test four months later.1 2
Direct messages are different, and the rules changed recently:
- View-once and replayable photos and videos can't be screenshotted or screen recorded in the app any more. Meta switched that off between October 2024 and February 2025.3 4 5
- Vanish mode and disappearing messages still come with a warning in the Help Center: "You'll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot."6 7
- Ordinary chat messages and photos carry no screenshot notice.
Many of the pages ranking for this question in October 2026 still say that screenshotting a view-once photo alerts the sender. Since late 2024 the screenshot itself is blocked, so in most cases there is nothing to alert anyone about.
What happens for each type of content
| What you screenshot or record | What the other person sees |
|---|---|
| A story, including a Close Friends story | Nothing documented for the screenshot. Your view itself is listed in their viewer list for 48 hours8 |
| A feed post, carousel or Reel | Nothing documented |
| A highlight or profile photo | Nothing documented |
| A normal chat message or photo | Nothing documented |
| A view-once or view-twice photo or video in a chat | You can't. "Taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you've sent in a chat"5 |
| A message in vanish mode | A notification, "if we detect they take a screenshot"6 |
| A timed disappearing message | A notification "if we detect this happens"7 |
| An Instant | Blocked, at least for teens. Instagram says "instants can't be screenshot or screenrecorded"9 |
We say "nothing documented" because Instagram has no page stating that story screenshots are private. A search of the Help Center for "screenshot" returns a page about how to take one and nothing about notifications,10 and the only screenshot detection it documents anywhere is in chats.5 6 7

Stories, posts and Reels
No notification is documented for screenshots or screen recordings of stories, posts and Reels. Instagram's Help Center documents screenshot detection only for disappearing content in chats,5 6 7 and we found no announcement or credible report of a story screenshot alert since 2018.
The 2018 test is where the idea that Instagram tells people comes from. In February 2018, TechCrunch reported that users in the test were "getting a warning that the next time they take a screenshot of a friend's story," and the person who posted would see "a new camera shutter logo next to anyone who took a screenshot of their photo" in the viewer list.1 In June, 9to5Google reported that Instagram had told BuzzFeed News it "officially ended this test," while keeping alerts for screenshots of disappearing direct messages.2 Instagram never gave a reason. You'll read that it ended because of user backlash, but that's a guess.
What does give you away on a story is the view itself. When you open someone's story, your username goes into their viewer list, which they can check for 48 hours after posting.8 A screenshot adds nothing to that. If you want to know how to watch a story without being listed, our guide to viewing Instagram stories anonymously goes through the options. We found no Instagram page describing different screenshot rules for Close Friends stories.
View-once photos and videos in chats
When you send a photo or video in an Instagram chat, you can choose View once, View twice (one replay) or Unlimited views, which leaves a preview in the thread.11 For the first two, screenshots and screen recordings are now blocked on the recipient's phone.
Meta announced the change on 17 October 2024, in a post about protecting teens from sextortion scams: "Soon, we'll no longer allow people to use their device to directly screenshot or screen record ephemeral images or videos sent in private messages." The same post said view-once and replayable media would no longer open on Instagram's website, "to avoid them circumventing this screenshot prevention."3 In February 2025, Meta wrote that it had "removed the ability to screenshot or screen record 'view once' photos and videos in DM and Messenger."4

Instagram's Help Center hasn't fully caught up. The page on the status of a sent photo says "Taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you've sent in a chat."5 The page on sending one still says the sender can "see if they were seen or if we detect someone took a screenshot."11 The newer behaviour is the one Meta announced and later confirmed, so that's what we go by. The older line probably still applies to anyone on an app version from before the change.
Nothing stops someone from photographing the screen with another phone. Social Media Today made the same point when it covered the rollout,12 and Instagram's own vanish mode page lists "Take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device" among the ways a message can outlive the chat.6
Vanish mode and disappearing messages
Vanish mode was announced for Messenger and Instagram in November 2020, with the promise that "If someone takes a screenshot of your chat while you're using vanish mode, you'll be notified."13 Messages in vanish mode disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. Instagram's Help Center still says that if the other person takes a screenshot or screen recording, "You'll receive a notification if we detect they take a screenshot."6 Timed disappearing messages, a newer feature only some regions have, carry the same warning: "You'll receive a notification if we detect this happens."7 The vanish mode page also notes it "may be unavailable in Japan and for countries located in Europe."6
There's one open question. When Social Media Today reported the 2024 change, it said Instagram was "implementing screenshot blocking for all DMs exchanged in 'Vanish Mode'" as well as view-once media.12 Meta's own announcement mentions only view-once and replayable photos and videos,3 and the vanish mode Help Center page still describes a notification, not a block.6 We couldn't confirm which is current. Either way, someone screenshotting a vanish mode chat should expect the other person to find out, or to be stopped.
Instants
Instants, which Instagram launched on 13 May 2026, are photos that disappear once viewed and can't be seen after 24 hours. Instagram's announcement says "instants can't be screenshot or screenrecorded." That line appears in a list of protections for teens, so it's not fully clear whether the block applies to adult accounts too.9

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Instagram notify when you screen record a story?
No notification is documented for stories, whether you screenshot or record. Where Instagram does restrict capture, in chats, its pages and announcements name screenshots and screen recordings together.7 3 The person who posted can still see that you viewed the story.8
Does Instagram notify if you screenshot a Close Friends story?
Not that Instagram documents. We found no page describing different screenshot rules for Close Friends stories. Your view of the story appears in the viewer list either way.8
Can you screenshot a view-once photo on Instagram?
Not in the app. Meta announced it would block screenshots and screen recordings of view-once and replayable photos and videos, and that they wouldn't open on Instagram's website,3 then said in February 2025 that it had removed the ability for view-once media.4 A photo taken with a second device isn't blocked,12 and we found nothing suggesting Instagram can detect one.
Does turning on airplane mode stop the screenshot notification?
For stories, posts and Reels there's no notification to stop. For vanish mode, we found claims both ways and nothing from Instagram, so we wouldn't rely on it.
Can an app tell me who screenshotted my story?
We found no Instagram feature or developer documentation that reports story screenshots, so there's nothing for an app to read. Apps that claim otherwise work like the profile viewer apps, and the ones that ask for your password put your account at risk.

The StoryStalker editorial team
StoryStalker runs a viewer for public Instagram content, so we follow how Instagram works and how it changes more closely than most people would want to. Each guide is built from Instagram's Help Center, Meta's announcements and developer documentation, and named reporting, and every claim links to the page it came from. When Instagram doesn't document something, we say so instead of guessing. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.
