How to view Instagram stories anonymously

March 26, 202611 min read
Viewing an Instagram story anonymously: a normal view puts your username in the viewer list, an Instagram Plus preview does not

When you watch someone's story, Instagram tells them. "When you see someone's story, they'll be able to tell that you've seen it," the Help Center says, and your username stays in their viewer list for 48 hours after they post.1 2 We found no setting that changes this for a free account.

Since June 2026 there is one official way around it. Instagram Plus, a subscription that costs $3.99 a month in the US, includes Story Preview. Meta told Fox Business a subscriber can take a mini preview without appearing on the viewer list, and Instagram's Help Center says the list and view number "do not include the usernames" of people who previewed.3 4 5 2 Outside of that, your options are a story viewer website (public accounts only), a second account (which the poster will see), or tricks like airplane mode that nobody has shown still work.

Method Works on What the poster sees Our take
Watching normally Any account you can see Your username, for 48 hours2 The default
Instagram Plus Story Preview Any account you can see Not your username2 5 The only method Instagram supports. Paid, and not available everywhere yet6
A story viewer website Public accounts Not your username, since your own account isn't used Never give one your Instagram password
A second account Public accounts, or private ones that approved it That other account's username Not anonymous, just a different name
Airplane mode Disputed Unknown No dated test or official word. Don't rely on it

None of these work on a private account that hasn't approved you as a follower.

What the poster can see

Only the person who posted a story can see who watched it.2 They open the story and swipe up to get the list of usernames. After the story expires at 24 hours they can still get the list from their archive, up to 48 hours after posting.2 7

Instagram Help Center: “You can look at who's seen your story up to 48 hours after you post it.” and “The viewer list and view number do not include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who have previewed your story.”
Instagram Help Center, “How to tell who's seen your Instagram story”, retrieved 8 October 2026.

Two details on that page matter here. The view number "includes all the replays of your story," so watching twice can raise the count while your name appears once. And the page now ends with a line about Instagram Plus: "The viewer list and view number do not include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who have previewed your story."2

We found no Instagram page or report describing a notification for story views, so the poster has to go and look. Assume they will.

Instagram Plus Story Preview

Instagram Plus began rolling out worldwide on 4 June 2026.3 Engadget reported the price as $3.99 a month,4 and Meta told Fox Business that prices vary by country.5 Instagram lists Story Preview under "See previews and insights," described as "Preview stories without the pressure to react."3

Instagram's own wording never says "anonymous," but its Plus feature page comes close: "Story Preview lets you peek at someone's story without appearing in their viewer list."8 Fox Business reported in September 2026 that Meta confirmed a subscriber can take a mini preview without appearing on the viewer list, and that people who post stories are shown a notice explaining that previews may not show up there.5 The Help Center puts it this way: "The viewer list and view number do not include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who have previewed your story."2

There are limits. When Instagram was testing Plus in March 2026, a Meta spokesperson told Engadget that a preview lets you see "some of another user's Story" without "showing up as a viewer."9 We haven't been able to confirm how much of a story a preview shows, or whether tapping through to the rest counts as a full view. The Help Center also says Plus "is not available to everyone right now,"6 and Instagram's announcement adds that "Included benefits may vary."3

The same subscription gives the poster new tools too. Subscribers can see how many times their stories were rewatched and "Quickly check if a specific person viewed your story," a feature Instagram calls Search Viewer List.3 So Plus makes it easier to look without being seen and easier to check who looked, depending on which side of the story you're on.

If you only want to check one story now and then, $3.99 a month (about $48 a year at the US price) is a lot to pay for it. If you do it daily, it's the only option that stays inside Instagram's rules and doesn't involve a third party.

Story viewer websites

Story viewer sites let you type a public username and watch that account's current stories in your browser, without logging in to Instagram. (Instagram's own website won't show stories to logged-out visitors; we checked what it does show in how to view Instagram without an account.) Your own Instagram account isn't used, so your username shouldn't end up in the viewer list, though we can't verify how any particular site fetches the story. They only work for public accounts. (StoryStalker runs one of these sites, which is why this guide doesn't rank or recommend any.)

Two things to know before you use one.

  1. Instagram's terms prohibit automated collection. Its Terms of Use rule out "accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission, regardless of whether such automated access or collection is undertaken while logged-in to an Instagram account."10 That is how sites like these generally work, so expect any given site to break or disappear without notice.
  2. Never give one your Instagram login. A site that only shows public stories has no need for your password. Instagram lists handing your username and password to a third-party app as one of the things that can get your account restricted for data scraping,11 and its Terms forbid anyone to "request or collect Instagram usernames, passwords, or misappropriate access tokens."10 If a viewer asks you to log in, close the tab.

A second account

Watching from another account keeps your main username off the list and puts the second account's name there instead. It works for public accounts. For a private account, the second account has to send a follow request and be approved, which means the person decides whether to let it see their stories.

This only stays anonymous if the poster can't tell who's behind the account. An account with no posts, no profile photo and a handful of followers is the kind of name people notice in a short viewer list.

Airplane mode and other tricks

The airplane mode trick goes like this: open Instagram, let the stories at the top load, turn on airplane mode, watch, close the app completely, then reconnect. The idea is that the view never reaches Instagram's servers.

We found no statement from Instagram about it, no changelog, and no test with a date and an app version. The guides that recommend it disagree about whether it still works: one updated in September 2026 lists it first among "four sure-shot ways,"12 while another, updated in July 2026, rates it "Low" and "Not recommended," saying the app now holds views and sends them when you reconnect.13 We couldn't verify either claim, and we haven't tested it ourselves. If being seen would be a problem for you, don't rely on it.

Two other tricks come up often:

  • Swiping halfway from the story before. You hold and drag from the previous person's story so the next one peeks in. At best you see the first frame, and the guide we read warns that one slip counts as a full view.13
  • Blocking and then unblocking the poster. One guide says that blocking the poster straight after viewing removes you from the list of viewers.14 We found nothing else to support it, and blocking someone to hide a story view is a lot of fuss for one story.

Private accounts

We know of no anonymous way to see a private account's stories. Instagram's table of public and private accounts says a private account's photos and videos on its profile and in feed are seen by "Your followers," and in search, Explore and hashtag pages by "No one."15 Only a public account's story can also turn up in Search and Explore.16 Viewer websites only work with public accounts, and a second account has to be approved first. Sites and apps that claim they can show private stories are, at best, wrong. At worst they're after your login or payment details. We cover what is and isn't visible in what you can see on a private Instagram account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone see if I view their Instagram story?

Yes. Your username appears in their viewer list for up to 48 hours after they post it.2 The exception is an Instagram Plus subscriber using Story Preview, who is left off the list.2 5

Does Instagram notify someone when I watch their story?

We found nothing describing a notification. The poster has to open the viewer list to see that you watched.

Can someone see if I watched their story more than once?

Not directly. Your username appears once, but the view number "includes all the replays of your story," so they may see more views than names.2

Can someone see if I view their highlights?

Instagram doesn't document a separate viewer list for highlights. The list it does document covers the 48 hours after the original story was posted.2 After that, it describes no way for the owner to see who watched.

Do Instagram Plus previews show up in the view count?

Instagram says "The viewer list and view number do not include the usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who have previewed your story."2

Does Instagram notify someone if I screenshot their story?

Not as far as anything Instagram documents. It tested a story screenshot alert in 2018 and ended the test. Screenshots work differently in chats, which we cover in does Instagram notify when you screenshot.

StoryStalker runs a viewer for public Instagram content, so we follow how Instagram works and how it changes more closely than most people would want to. Each guide is built from Instagram's Help Center, Meta's announcements and developer documentation, and named reporting, and every claim links to the page it came from. When Instagram doesn't document something, we say so instead of guessing. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.
