Can you view a private Instagram account?

A private Instagram profile: photo, name and bio are visible to anyone, posts only to approved followers

Not unless they approve you as a follower. Instagram shows a private account's photos and videos to "Your followers," and to "No one" in search results, Explore, and hashtag and location pages.1 What anyone can see, logged in or not, is the profile photo, name, username and bio.1

"Private Instagram viewer" sites and apps can't change that, because Instagram is built to send private posts only to approved followers. What those sites are after is your time, your personal details or your Instagram password. A security researcher did report a leak in October 2025, which he says stopped working within days. It's covered below.

What a private account shows to people who don't follow it

Instagram's Help Center has a table comparing public and private accounts. For a private account, it says:1

What Who can see it
Profile photo, name, username and bio "Anyone on or off Instagram"
Photos and videos on the profile or in feed "Your followers"
Photos and videos in search, Explore, hashtag and location pages "No one"
Links to photos and videos in search engines "No one"
Public accounts it follows, and public accounts that follow it "Anyone on Instagram and Threads"
Downloading its Reels, remixing its videos or embedding its posts "No one"

That fifth row surprises people. Instagram lists the public accounts you follow, and the public accounts that follow you, as visible to "Anyone on Instagram and Threads," whether your account is public or private. Only the private accounts it follows, and private accounts that follow it, are limited to its followers.1

Posts a private account is tagged in follow its privacy too: "Only confirmed followers can see photos and videos you are tagged in on your profile."2 Photos it appears in on other people's public accounts are a different matter: they're visible to anyone who can see that public account's post.

The legitimate ways to see more

  • Send a follow request. It's up to them. Requests show up in their activity, where they can approve or ignore them.1
  • Ask them. If you know the person, a message often works better than a request from an account they don't recognise.
  • Look where they appear publicly. Photos of them posted by public accounts are visible to anyone who can see those posts.

Asking a mutual follower to show you, or making a second account to get approved, works in the sense that you'll see the posts. It also goes around a choice the person made about who sees their life, and most people would be upset to find out. That's worth weighing before you do it.

How "private Instagram viewer" sites work

Search for a private Instagram viewer and you'll find dozens. They tend to follow the same pattern. The security site MalwareTips documented it for one of them, Goonview, and calls it "a common template":3

  1. You type a username and a "searching" or "decrypting" animation plays.
  2. You're shown blurred or locked thumbnails and a post count, sometimes with "unlocking" progress text.
  3. To see the photos, you have to "complete verification" by filling in a survey, installing apps, signing up for a trial or handing over your email or phone number.

The blurred tiles aren't the account's photos. MalwareTips describes the business plainly: "The scammer gets paid for each completed action."3 Any site or app that asks for your Instagram login is a bigger risk, because then it has your password. Instagram warns that if you give your login to apps that offer likes or followers, "they can gain complete access to your account," and the same applies to anything else you hand your login to.4 Credential-stealing Instagram apps aren't new: in 2017 the security firm ESET found 13 apps on Google Play stealing Instagram logins, three of them with between 100,000 and 500,000 installs each.5

StoryStalker runs a viewer for public accounts, so we know how our own tool gets its data. A public account's posts are served to anyone. Instagram's servers are designed to send a private account's posts only to its approved followers, so a third-party site has nothing legitimate to fetch.

The October 2025 leak

The one credible report we found of private posts leaking is this. In January 2026, BleepingComputer reported that security researcher Jatin Banga had found private profiles returning "encoded CDN links to photos that should not have been accessible" in the page code, when opened by a logged-out visitor on certain mobile devices. In his tests of private profiles he had created or had permission to use, "at least 28% of these accounts were returning captions and links to private photos."6

Banga says he first reported it to Meta on 12 October 2025. According to him, Meta fixed it shortly after and then closed his report as "not applicable," saying it couldn't reproduce the problem. Meta initially called it a CDN caching problem, which Banga disputed.6

A private viewer site didn't find this; a researcher did, and he says it stopped working around 16 October 2025. Meta hasn't confirmed what happened. Either way it's the exception that shows how things are meant to work: Instagram's servers are supposed to check that you're an approved follower before sending anything.6

Teen accounts are private by default

"If you're under 18, your Instagram account is private by default."7 Meta's Teen Accounts, which make this automatic along with other restrictions, had reached every country where Instagram is available by 11 June 2025.8 Teens under 16 need a parent's permission to switch to public, and "Teens 16-17 can change their accounts to public without permission, unless they have set up supervision with their parent or guardian."7

If your own account is private

To switch, go to your profile, tap Menu, then under Who can see your content tap Account privacy and turn on Private account.7 Business profiles can't be made private.7

Going private doesn't remove anyone who already follows you. If you don't want someone to keep seeing your posts, remove them as a follower or block them.1 Your profile photo, name, username and bio stay visible to everyone either way.1

The StoryStalker editorial team

StoryStalker runs a viewer for public Instagram content, so we follow how Instagram works and how it changes more closely than most people would want to. Each guide is built from Instagram's Help Center, Meta's announcements and developer documentation, and named reporting, and every claim links to the page it came from. When Instagram doesn't document something, we say so instead of guessing. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.
